ABOUT THE DOCUMENTARY

“Kam Theatre Lab: The Old Same Story” is a documentary that explores an experimental theatre collective based in northwestern Ontario in the 1970s-80s. Combining clown and mask performance with the social commentary embodied in the back-to-the-land movement, the group experimented with national and global performance art forms and adapted them to the unique issues and concerns of Northwestern Ontario communities. In a week-long Bread & Circuses Festival of the early 1980s, Kam Lab hosted theatre troupes from across Canada and resulted in the establishment of the Canadian Popular Theatre Alliance. The struggles Kam Theatre Lab faced when balancing the motivations of individual artists, the ideals of the collective, and the attempt to earn a living in a marginal town, led to schisms in the troupe. All the exhilaration and tension that come from close personal and creative relationships—while striving for uncompromising artistic and political vision—were manifest in Kam Theatre Lab.

The Nether presents a thought-provoking exploration of the ethical, psychological, and moral implications of Virtual Reality and, by extension, the challenges and ramifications of contemporary digital life. Set in a near-future world where immersive virtual environments (The Nether) allow people to fully engage in dark, curated experiences, the play raises questions about identity, personal responsibility, free will, and the consequences of these digital spaces. Through the character-driven investigation of “The Hideaway,” a bespoke and private virtual world, the play delves into the blurred lines between the real and the virtual, pushing us to reconsider how we engage with technology.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

In this introductory weekend workshop, participants gain insight into the visual world of film and theatre and learn how Art Direction sets the tone, mood and character definition in fictional space. On March 7, KWLT presents its annual theatrical competition: one script, interpreted several ways, with the audience voting for their favourite & prizes bestowed by an adjudicator. But before that… we need a script. 📝

That’s where you come in.

The March Madness planning team is now accepting scripts for consideration as the basis for this year’s event. What we’re looking for:

- Short, ideally about 10 minutes long
- 3–4 characters, ideally neutral with respect to ages, genders, and ethnicities
- Widely open to interpretation, in terms of setting as well as theme

Scripts received by January 31 will receive full consideration. The author of the selected script will receive an honorarium of $80 in lieu of royalties, and will be invited to join us at the performance. 🎉

ABOUT THE SHOW

When two trans women, Sam and Jen, find themselves trapped in a multiverse of Shakespeare’s plays, they have to find their way through a mess of monologues and iambic pentameter to escape back to the real world. With only King Henry IV Part 1 between them and freedom, it should be a simple matter of keeping their heads low, playing their roles, and never breaking the rhythm, but when Jen starts to notice that Henry ‘Hotspur’ Percy doesn’t want to play it by the script, they’re left to wonder - are they really the only ones down there?

Important ‼️ (especially for anyone participating in our Winter 2026 production of The Nether by Jennifer Haley)

Tomorrow evening, acting coach Melinda Little will be leading a Theatrical Intimacy Workshop. This is a consent-based workshop to:

- introduce shared language (like “closed rehearsal,” “consent to touch,” etc.)
- teach basic tools for giving and withdrawing consent
- help everyone learn how to say “yes,” “no,” or “not right now” without fear or shame
- introduce the pillars of Intimacy direction = context, communication, consent, choreography, and closure

This workshop is not exclusive to actors in this term’s production—anyone who is interested in attending is welcome to come!

Important ‼️ (especially for anyone participating in our Winter 2026 production of The Nether by Jennifer Haley)

Tomorrow evening, acting coach Melinda Little will be leading a Theatrical Intimacy Workshop. This is a consent-based workshop to:

- introduce shared language (like “closed rehearsal,” “consent to touch,” etc.)
- teach basic tools for giving and withdrawing consent
- help everyone learn how to say “yes,” “no,” or “not right now” without fear or shame
- introduce the pillars of Intimacy direction = context, communication, consent, choreography, and closure

This workshop is not exclusive to actors in this term’s production—anyone who is interested in attending is welcome to come!

📝Describe your job in five words!
The head of lighting (editor's note: she doesn't even need 5... )

❓Why this role?
A twist. Originally, the heads were full, but I was told the day after the deadline for adding classes that Head of Lighting was open... but if I were to become a designer, lighting would be my top choice.

🎤What are your hobbies?
Cooking!!!! My greatest pleasure during holidays is to invite people over to have the meals I cook.

💭What are your future dreams?
Be a stage manager. Or a dessert shop owner and buy the best seats for all the shows I like.

⁉️What's the silliest dream you've had?
That an octopus monster was destroying the world, and our family was in danger. My dad told me to run away, but I went back for my homework and missed the chance to escape. Underwater, I fought the octopus with my schoolbag on my back.

A twist. Originally, the heads were full, but I was told the day after the deadline for adding classes that Head of Lighting was open... but if I were to become a designer, lighting would be my top choice.

Cooking!!!! My greatest pleasure during holidays is to invite people over to have the meals I cook.

💭What are your future dreams?
Be a stage manager. Or a dessert shop owner and buy the best seats for all the shows I like.

⁉️What's the silliest dream you've had?
That an octopus monster was destroying the world, and our family was in danger. My dad told me to run away, but I went back for my homework and missed the chance to escape. Underwater, I fought the octopus with my schoolbag on my back.

I love backstage work, and this role is full of it! I've worked at the Drayton festival theatre as a dresser, so I wanted something different.

Grandma hobbies. I've recently taken up embroidery, but I love to bake, knit, and crochet! If you need a handmade gift, hit me up.

I would love to earn enough for me to own a house! Oh, how I long to have in unit laundry...
